This was my 3rd year participating with the Misión Joven service trip to the Dominican Republic. Every year has been unique and rewarding. Seeing the families in their new homes brings tear to my eyes! I love going into the small towns and countryside to visit the homes, schools and medical clinics. We had wonderful experiences visiting with people. I especially enjoy getting to know our Dominican missionary partners. After 3 years, I feel like I have lifelong friends in the Dominican Republic.

As a nurse on Misión Joven, I found myself looking into the eyes of patients who appeared before me in our medical clinics, listening to them as they shared about their ailments in complete confidence, all the while feeling the bond of our common humanity grow. I came back to the US filled to the brim not only with Dominican cuisine but with the memory of satisfying work shared with our Dominican counterparts and the soulful warmth and hospitality of the Dominican people, who freely offered their hugs, smiles, laughter, and tears.

2014 was my inaugural Misión Joven experience in the DR. I spent several days working in the schools using my artistic skills to do drawing lessons, visuals for an eco-science project and English/Spanish lessons. Then, I spent a day on the construction site of our last home we built. And, in case you were wondering, nailing up siding is harder than it looks. :o) …. This was truly a warmly rewarding & life-altering endeavor!

“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others” (Mahatma Gandhi)… Participating in Misión Joven 2014 was exactly the “medicine” I needed to refocus my life and simply recalibrate. The people were so gracious and warm, despite their evident struggles. I will cherish this experience for my lifetime!!
