BUILDING
During the two week mission we built 13 new homes for people living in extremely poor conditions. These homes all started with back-breaking pick and shovel work to prepare the foundation of cement blocks. Homes include wood siding, cement floors, tin roofs, paint and electricity for a light fixture. For the first time we decided to buy and donate basic and simple furnishings for the families that vitally needed them: Beds, plastic dining room table and chairs, a table-top propane stove, small fan and solar lanterns.....basic life necessities we too often take for granted. The U.S. and D.R. volunteers working side by side is a terrific sight! We had numerous "Entire Home Sponsors" who donated large amounts to fund the building of an entire new home. We made and brought dedication plaques with us for the residents to keep and display, and to put a personal touch on their home. The reward of knowing a family has a home with windows, cement floor, a sturdy foundation and a leak proof roof is a wonderful feeling!

MEDICAL CLINICS
In 2019 we treated over 800 patients, giving out hundreds of pounds of medicine we brought with us....some antibiotics and many parasite medicine, but mostly over the counter medicines. It is always an awakening to realize that what we can easily purchase as we need it, our Dominican sisters and brothers mostly cannot afford to buy even aspirin. Our medical team was blessed with two volunteer U.S. physicians, five D.R. physicians and one D.R. ophthalmologist who provided eye exams and distributed hundreds of used donated eye glasses. Another item we take for granted! In addition we brought with us donated wheel chairs, walkers and crutches that were so appreciated. Paying it forward! |
EDUCATION
Our educational team focused on working in two different public schools to model for the teachers the most advanced methods of how to more effectively teach first and second graders how to read. We gave out about five hundred pounds of donated books, workbooks, pencils, scissors, glue, rulers etc. The creativity of our volunteer professional teachers was amazing. Reading is for a lifetime of success, growing and learning. Did you know? You NEVER unlearn how to read!

In loving memory of Patricia Foley Karl
Our 30th anniversary year was dedicated to our dear volunteer and friend of 19 missions, Patricia Foley Karl, who passed into the arms of our loving God on November 28, 2018. Patricia worked tirelessly throughout the years, coordinating the educational team, gaining sponsors and donations, as well as countless hours helping to organize the mission.
We truly love and miss her dearly.
We truly love and miss her dearly.
None of these works of love could have been accomplished without God's great and unconditional love, or without your most generous support. About 95.5% of all dollars donated goes to the direct benefit of these wonderful and hard-working Dominican Republic sisters and brothers. - Fr. Joachim Lally
